Hello,

If some of you may have noticed in some previous posts I have a sick yellow tang, so why am I asking this question. The reason is that the person that I got the fish from got credit on the yellow tang because I figured it to be a goner, so then I was able to get it replaced at no charge. I then decided to try a clown tang. I have seen some negative things about thier ability to be kept in marine aquariums. My question is would the be OK in a 108 gallon tank with three other fish, or should I get a powder brown tang intead. I basically have a free fish coming to me, so I may as well take advandage of it

Thanks for the input, it is appreciated !

I have a yellow tang and a 4" clown tang in my 120 gallon. The yellow was in there first, then I added the clown tang. I tried adding a Lollipop tang, aka white cheek, and the two of them ganged up on him, I was forced to remove him. My yellow and clown spar all the time for about 15 minutes when the lights go out, but no problems besides some cuts on each every now and then. I will say though, my clown is a very active swimmer, always side to side in the tank, which makes me wish I had a 180 or so. I've had my clown about 6 months and my yellow about 10. Like I said a clown is active and needs a large swim area, you can take it from there.

I keep tangs.
The clown tang is almost impossible to keep. I have not been sucessful and all of the information I have read confirms that they are almost impossible to keep.
It is not a matter of experience or water quality. Like cleaner wrasse this fish is best left in the ocean.
Having stated this there will always be someone whose has been sucessful. They are the lucky ones.

Clown tangs are active swimmers but don't need a huge tank. However, they are next to impossible to keep healthy, and if you find one in a store, more than likely it is not eating regularly and is slowly wasting away. I purchased one before on the advice of the LFS that it would do great in a reef, and popped it into my reef. It didn't eat a thing and eventually died. I later found out that some people have observed them to be planktivores, and also to eat only a certain type of macroalgae in their systems (a blue one, not sure what kind). I tried live brine, all kinds of caulerpa, ground up fish and shrimp, flake, nothing worked on it and it lasted about a month nibbling on this and that, but nothing I offered it. Wonderful looking fish, did great in my tank with the other fish, but never ate anything, and I think this is a common theme. Get the powder brown.

Don't get a clown tang unless you plan on for sure upgrading to a much larger tank soon. These guys get big and are well known for being very active swimmers and probably the most aggresive tang there is. I'm concerned my 415 gallon tank might end up being to small for mine.
