Yellow Tang with Cloudy Eyes

Hello,


My new yellow tang has developed cloudy eyes. He has not eaten ( to my knowledge ) for a week. I have tried everthing under the sun for food: lettuce, seeweed select, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, bloodworm, spirnulina flake, regular flake. I am not sure, but it seems as if the is a sort of brownish rash developing on one side of him just behind his gills. Would anybody knw what it is and what I should do. I am very concerned that whatever it is is going to spread to my baby ( French ASnglefish ). Any help would be much appreciated.

Hmmm....not sure what to think.

Many tangs and angels arrive nowadays with trematodes, and that can be a cause of cloudy eyes. We treat these with a FW dip for 5 minutes (RO water of like temp of the tank the fish are in), and you will see sesame-seed sized parasites come off the eyes, and out the mouth and gills.

Other causes of cloudy eyes are bacterial infections. Usually the eyes swell with this.

Not sure what the brown rash is...without seeing it...

I'd try a 5 min fw dip and see if anything drops off. If that doesn't alleviate anything within 24 hours, then I'd look at hospital tank and meds.

Some here are opposed to FW dip...consider all the advice you receive and do what your intuition tells you. I personally have used FW dip to treat dozens of fish in both home and LFS settings, and while it is stressful for the 5 minutes it happens, the fish seem to get over it quickly. When the parasites fall off and leave the mouth and gills, the fish experience instant relief and can breathe easier when returned to their tank. This procedure is often as stressful on the person performing it

But IMO and IME it's a quick treatment with more pros than cons in certain instances.

If it's bacterial, FW dip won't help, (probably won't anyway) and you'll want to check into some antibiotics.

I have a Blueface angel which had similar symtomp last week. Following Jenn's advice (Thanks, Jenn), I did a 5 min FW dip but also treated the fish for 3 days with Maracyn II( at daouble the dose). The fish is now back in the quarantine tank with much clearer(almost back to normal) eyes. No short term side effect from the FW dip or the abx Rx which I could see. Do a search for cloudy eye to get more info.

What are all the symptoms. As Jenn suggested, bacterial infections can be secondary to a parasitic infection. A large water change is the first step. If that doesn't work you can treat the fish in quarantine. Hyposalinity will clear up most parasites (SG 1.009). Maracyn-Two at the double dose for a minimum of five days is always my recommendation for bacterial eye infections. Sometimes treatment with M2 should last 7 to 10 days. The rash can be an indication that the bacterial infection is systemic. Yellow tangs will being to hemmorage (turn red) just from poor water conditions like a pH below 8.0
