Next time your forced at gunpoint to shop at PETCO! Ask your fish specialist(the guy who only been working there 2 days that they threw over into aquatics) what the company policy is for putting away just recieved fish. It is against there policy to
"Float" bags. If the District Manager ever see's a bag being floated in a tank he will right them up. There policy is to simply cut open the bag dump the fish in a net and catapult them into the nearest tank as quickly as possible.
Dont you love corperate america!

thats not company policy the petco in my area float bags and I told the manager about the drip method and they started using that method for lion fish. I think he told you that to shut you up most of the time the employees are lazy and dont care but very few do care. I had one person at petco told a man he can have to tangs in a 30 g tank and I stop him from getting them the the employee got mad at me for telling him call headquaters on them and see if somthing can be done to stop them

Strange I should see this message. I live in the KC area and one of the local suppliers for the Petcos around here demands that his fish are NOT floated. He sells mainly freshwater fish mind you. As I was told he refuses to supply the petcos if they float the bags. His rationale? Well his feelings are that the extra time in the bags under low O2, high CO2, high ammonia conditions is far worse than any shock the difference in ph and temperature could be.
Truthfully... there have been many times I've chucked freshwater fish into situations where the pH was much higher than where they came and there have been no problems. Dump a fish from a high pH into a low pH and then there are problems. So his rationale makes since here since the water usually turns acid in the bag with time.
On the other hand I've had fish that seemed to do dreadfully when not properly acclimated when dealing with saltwater tanks. I wish I knew why, but as far as I've been able to tell the water was same temp/salinity/and pH. Just one of the myraid reasons I suppose folks are often spooked by keeping salt water fish instead of cichlids.

I have read Petco's PNP.. something that is not available to the public. Ask the fish guy to show you his copy. He should have one. It is up to the store manager if they float or not. Since they will be the one the District Manager will be complaining to and writing up. Petco is a corperation and has policies it intends all its employee's to follow.

ps. PNP = policies & procedures

The policy is probably in place to avoid people picking out bags of purple tangs from the tanks, writing the SKU for a guppy on the bag and heading off to the checkout.

I would buy this theory except for the fact that every time they punch in a SKU to the register. There windows95 based program shows
them a nice little picture of the livestock in this case fish. Also they would ask you if you got your gurantee slip if it was fresh water...

But they dont drug test so i guess that is a possibility....

I have been to several Petcos and most are nothing write home about. They are not bad, however, if you are looking for dry goods.

There is a Petco near where I work that has 2 very dedicated employees in the fish section. The young gal is pretty smart about fish. Not as smart as me because she didn't know about reefs.org

. We have had several conversations about saltwater fish.

While I speak for all Petcos, this one floats their bags. They also keep some pretty clean tanks and feed a variety of foods.
