What Type of Fans are the best for the money - not the hang on or walmart fans but the fans that you can build into the canopy - like cpu fans -

and where can you get them -

Radio shack. They aren't the best but mine were going well for 8 months untill I sold off my tank. The better ones cost 40.oo or more. Spend 17.00 on R/S's and replace them every 2 years.

I have used the radioshack fans - they cooled ok but if you are blowing air out of the hood, the salt/humidity will corrode them quickly. Mine lasted approx 1 yr. I have heard that they last longer if you are pulling air from the outside of the hood in to cool. Less effect of salt. I have used a turbofan from home depot ($11) but I have enough room in my hood to fit this fan.

you can laugh if you want to. i built a top with an open back and use a fan from a microwave. i have an icecap fan in the hood and don't even use it. The microwave fan is silent, powerfull and cools my 250mh and vho's with no problem. i put a reostat on the fan to slow it down because you don't need the power. the icecap is too noisy at a speed equal to the silent microwave fan. i have to fan on a pole in back of my tank and blowing in.

I've been using the same RS fan for 9+ years and it's still going strong. Covered with rust, even accidently dropped it in the water last week (unplugged off of course) Rinsed it off, and plugged it back in. Yes it's a bit loud, if/when it dies will prob replace with an icecap or similar. The RS fan can be mounted into the canopy.

I use a small 6" office fan because they are completely silent. It doesn't fit under the hood I have so I put it under the tank and blow air up the wall behind the tank. I then put a simple air deflector on the wall behind the hood so that the air then blows into the hood. Works perfectly.

I just got two of the icecaps fans for a new canopy I built over the holidays. They work great and are pretty quiet. I have 2 96W PC's and 2 250W halides about 10 inches off the water on a 75 gallon tank. I left the canopy open in the back and the fans are angled to blow directly on the water and ducted up through the top to pull in only cold air. Anyway, the tank temp was 77-79 before (only PC's) and is 77-79 after the halides and fans were added. Granted it's not summer yet, but I'm happy so far. Hope this helps.
