After noticing some more than usual algae growing in my tank. I decided to test my phosphate and find them to be 0.13, much higher than normal of <0.05 At first I thought I was feeding the fish too much or that the ESV phytoplankton I was using was causing the phosphate. Finally tested my RO/DI make up water and it read 0.15. Tested my tap water and it read 0.15 too. So I changed out all filters minus the RO with new ones and my RO/DI water is still around 0.1 What gives? Do I need to replace my RO filter too? The unit is a 4 stage AquaFX that is only 6 months old with maybe 600g of water made with it. My tap water is pretty good too, TDS of around 10. Any ideas on how to get the phosphates out of my make up water? Maybe run the last stage though a phosphate sponge??

It's interesting that you have the same phospahte reading in your input water as in your output water.

A home RO unit even without a DI stage should take out most of this. The DI stage should finish it off altogether.

One possibility is that you phosphate kits is not reliable at low ranges.

The other possibility is that the DI resin is exhausted - but this possibility still leaves the problem of why the RO stages have not removed most of the phosphate.

Assuming you really do have phospate in your output water then your DI resin needs to be recharged (or replaced).

I think the rejection ratio of phosphate for an RO unit should be about 75%. I might be asking a stupid question, but are you using the correct output hose?

I am definitely using the correct output hose on the RO/DI. I have replaced the DI filter as well as the carbon and sediment. As I understood it, phosphates from an RO/DI unit should be zero. Maybe you are right and my test kit in the low range is flawed. I am using the Seachem test kit, I originally started using the kit because it was able to give a me reading under 0.5 which most others did not. Any suggestions on a new test kit or what my problems are? Do you think there would be any problems running the RO/DI water through a phosphate sponge?

That is very strange. I've got the Aqua/FX 5 stage RO/DI. I've been running it for about 6 months as well. My TDS is still showing zero.

I'm work with Aqua FX,and I saw that you had a problem. I'm just curious if you ever found out why your phosphates were not being rejected.

Did you ever verify the operating ranges of your phosphate test kit?

If test kit is in operating ranges, what did your TDS read at with your feed water and your permeate water?

Thats all the information I'll need to troubleshoot this any further.

The tests seem to be ok. I have my RO/DI unit in the basement, for some reason the phosphate from the spigot in my basement tests at .5 but upstairs measures at .15 I don't know why. Anyway, after running the water in the basement through my RO/DI phosphates are at .1 Maybe the RO membrane needs to be replaced? I've only run maybe 500 gallon through the unit so I wouldn't think the membrane is bad but I don't know what else it could be.
