I just picked up a 55 gallon tank with an amiracle sump and overflow box, used. I have a 5 gallon nano reef currently with a powerhead and a tubbed powerfilter for circulation. How should i set this up this 55 if I want it as a reef tank? I want mostly live rock and a DSB. The sump uses bio-balls. Is there any way I can use the sump until I can put together a refugium to use instead? plus, should I use the sump without bio balls and is there a way to convert this sump into a refugium?
Thanks
Bob

Take out the bio balls you won't want to use those. Glue some acrylic baffles to seperate were the DSB will be, pour some sand in and add some cool algeas. Check out your menards and try to gat a 65 watt power Compact outdoor flood they are 65k bulbs and work great for refugiums. Thats what I did for my refugium, but I had made it seperate, its kinda of sloppy looking. but it does work, so its fine by me.

This is what I would do. Have a 4" DSB and around 55 lbs of LR in the main tank. Add a partition to your sump after the bioball chamber. The height is up to you, maybe half way up. Toss the bioballs. Add more LR and macroalgae to this deeper sump area, light with PC like clwnphish mentioned. You will probably want to add an in sump skimmer as well.
