When water touch up is needed I separate mine...

I use a Fluval and put a fluval sponge into the bottom chamber with a liile floss around the sides to ensure that water flows up throught the middle of the sponge. On top of the sponge I put the phosphate remover. In the next chamber more phosphate remover. And in the last chamber my carbon with another sponge on top with more floss around the side.

Works like a champ.
