I was thinking of adding an elegance coral to my tank. Are these difficut to keep. Anthing special I should know...I dont want to buy something thats as likly to survive as a powder blue tang
Elegance corals are beautiful, but for some reason, they have become very difficult to keep. Last I knew no one was really sure of the reason. I would recommend against them.
I snatched up a beautiful one last summer - gorgeous greens and yellows in it. It's huge. I put it on the bottom of my tank like I was supposed to (I've got a 75g with 4x96 watt pc's) and it lost its color, put out tons of mucus and started receding. This went on for about 2 months and then it just stayed a brownish color and didn't do much of anyhing. Just recently (maybe a month ago?) it started putting its tentacles out there (barely) and looking better and happy, but it will probably always be this ugly color now.
I believe elegances are being collected differently than they were in the past. I read something about a year ago about collectors having to go furthur away from shore to get them.

If Julian Sprung is correct, the problem with elegance corals is that they are coming in infected with a pathogen, which can be eliminated by the use of antibiotics. See Reef Notes in the current FAMA.
I have been told they sometimes don't ship too well, therefore becoming susceptible to infection. Bascially I was told if you find a good specimin and are very careful not to harm the tissue in transit home from the lfs, that they do really well. I've seen a few at my local store that they've kept in their show tank for a while now and are doing really well. Just my 2 cents.
