Anyone have any suggestions on how to make a Mantis shrimp trap? Im sure this has been discussed before but the forum search is down and this Mantis has killed several shrimp, snails and crabs.
Best way seems to be to take a 2L plastic pop bottle and cut the top off about 2-3" down invert it and glue it back on. The Idea being sort of like the wasp traps- it will have a hard time getting out but the funnel shape will let it in.
Some say that that won't work and there is a trap out there (in
this thread somebody has attached a picture of one) that may work. Or if you know which rock he is in take it out and flush him out.
I successfully used the inverted plastic bottle top trap, but not with a 2l bottle. I would suggeste a longer and narrower bottle like a water bottle. Watch carefully and pull the trap out immediately after it enters. I used a cube of formula 1 as bait inside and it worked within 5 minutes.
I tried to do the bottle trick today. In fact I could see the mantis peaking out of a hole in a rock. So I put the head of the bottle right in front of the hole he was hiding in and all he did was poke his head in there a few times but never any further.
Do you know if Mantis shrimp eat coral...Ive lost some mushrooms and star polyps and Im wondering if the Mantis is responsible.
I thought of removing the rock he's in....problem is that rock has 4 other rocks on top of it. Plus the hole in the rock is open at both ends and the moment I come close he bails.
Tough thing to catch but I'll get him especially if he's the reason for my tank to be crashing.
I had a little boxing match with a mantis and a pair of tweezers one night. It was entertaining trying to catch him the first hour or so. Then I got ticked and stuck some epoxy over the hole and made him a nice little TOMB!!! If there are two exits then try two globs. Seemed to do the trick.
I caught him!!! I tried the plastic bottle trap, placed in front of his favorite rock and sat down to read a book. About 15 min later I can see alot of activity in the bottle and he was in there. And I must say he was bigger and more vicious than I thought. About 3 inches long and attacked the frozen brine like a shark attack you seen on Discovery channel.
Hopefully now things in my tank can improve...but with my luck I probably have either another mantis or some toxins. Thanks for your help everyone. Glad I joined this board
mrgoont, keep your eyes open for more. I had 4 of them in my rock (110 #'s from aquacultured rock from Florida). It took me about a month to finally rid them from my tank.

how long till you realized that you had more in there? Was it just a case of hearing that loud clicking noise? I have some Florida rock and I have some Fiji rock...do they usually come from Florida rock?
