Got the crap shocked out of me last night, it was worth it.

After wiring / installing my new ice cap 660 w/ 3 5 foot vho's into my canopy, I notice one of my pumps wasn' running. Of course I grabbed the pump in one hand, and tried unplugging/replugging the cord with the other hand. Needless to say, got the $h!t knocked ot of me. I have been hit by 110 many times, this was the worst, it threw me about 3-4 feet! But after I collected my self, said a few choice words, etc.... Got to plug my new lights in, so all in all it was a good night. Just thought I would try and provide a good laugh for someone this morning!

You should install yourself a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlet. For about $8, its a must where water and electricity meet.

Woke up with a soar shoulder. I have the GFCI's (not installed), but I don't really like them for one reason. If the power goes out, or they are tripped when I am not there, the tank won't start back up. It's a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. This is the first time I have gotten shocked by anything around my tank, I am usually more careful. I guess this time I was to excited to get the lights on, and wasn't paying attention. Oh welll lesson learned, still debating the GFCI's

Wasn't by chance a RIO pump was it?

Put the GFI's in, next time you might not be so lucky, saltwater and electricity IS a deadly combo.

Just put the main circulation pump on a non-gfi circuit. GFI will protect you from other things beside shock, such as fire.

Well, no- he was complaining above that he was concerned that the entire system might shut down and it seems to me that just the main pump could be on a non-gfi circuit so that couldn't happen. I meant to imply that all the other items would be on gfi circuits, but I guess I didn't.

All gfi for me, though!

highrpm, what was you thinkin dude. Well mabe you wasn't. I don't care how many gfci breakers you get, you will still get a shock from doing something like that. For just a second anyway until the breaker trips. I highly recommend that in the future you take your hand out of the water, dry it off, then remove the plugs. You were lucky you got thrown, next time you may not. Happy reefin

While I am on the subject, does anyone know about GFCI breakers instead of using an outlet? Will these automatically turn back on after a power outage?

yea I learned long ago that if you are messin with the mechanics in the tank you need to dry it off be fore you start messin witht he power strip. The first time this happened to me I was in a hurry (never a good idea when workin on the reef) and I stuck my hand over the strip and a stream of salt water went down my arm into an outlet, for about half a second it looks pretty cool seein this blue ark traveling up your arm then you are sent to the floor kinda twichin.

Wow. What a story, You guys sure convinced me on GFCI. Especially if you have kids in the house. I think I might put a lock on the cabinet doors to the sump too!
