Fishpoo, if you take a look at my website, all the pics were shot with a Nikon Coolpix 950. I don't know how much of a difference there is between them. You can get the 950 for between $400 and $500. I threw together a quick page with some macros and other cool pics. I didn't get a chance to edit them or clean them up. And mac your just gonna have to deal with the crop hahaha.

macros page

Hope these give you an idea. I tried the Sony..CACA

Take a look at the following websites:

http://www.dpreview.com/

http://www.steves-digicams.com/

There's a LOT of good info there.

You'll need to decide:

* How much money you're willing to spend
* How large of a picture you want to take (megapixels).
* What you want to use it for (macro shots, general purpose photography, etc)
* If you want to be able to take the photos into Kmart, Walmart, etc on CD and be able to print off 3x5 photoquality pics (this generally relates to the megapixel capability of the camera)
* etc...

From everything that I've read so far, the Nikon Coolpix 9xx series has one of the best macro capabilities of the cameras out there. However, I prefer the feel of holding an SLR camera and based on dpreview's comments on the Sony 3.3 and 5 megapixel cameras, I'm seriously considering either the 505 or 707. Kinda spendy, but the image size and quality puts it over the top for me.

Also, there was a talk on #reefs about a year ago about photographing your aquarium. Discussed equipment, cameras, techniques, etc:

Forgive me for being so ignorant, but I've got a new Sony CD-R Mavica and I know they take great macros.

I just don't know the secrets to taking macros.

I put it in macro mode, then I get close to the subject, then push the shutter button. But my pictures don't look anything like ya'll's. Any tips?

How do you get that close to the subject thru the glass? Why doesn't the glass show up on the pictures?

I got a Nikon 775 for Christmas. I have tried to do shot of my tank but with the curve of a 46 bow, it has become difficult. Attached is a macro shot of my Red Sea Xenia.

these were taken with a 995. I'm still learning to use the camera to its full potential.

Glenn,
With my 995 it came with a copy of Adobe Photoshop 5.0, Limited Edition. The cover describes it as "An Introductory set of world-standard photo-editing tools"
I would imagine that you could order the cd separately.
