I have decided to start making my own frozen fish food. I have been using formula one with great sucess but the cost "as I use 16 cubes/day" is starting to get to me.

I would like your recipies for frozen food.

Thanks

heres what i make.. i take say 1 dozen fresh frozen shrimp, two dozen fresh frozen scallops, and about 3 bottleneck clams (i shell them and freeze them first) then add all these to a blender (quisnart) get some red, green Seaweed select just 1 sheet per color(soak this in water till soft) and some reefsnow or whatever phyto you use poor about 1/2 cup of that in and about 1/3 cup of selcon (the expencive part) and run the blender on pulse a few times till you get nice small chuncks out of the frozen pieces then put all this into a ziplock back and place back in the freezer Wala instant food (watch out the first time you feed this your skimmer will explode from protien (it only seems to happen once?? i dunno why)

hope this help

I mix calamari, crab meat, shrimp, nori, omega 3 brine shrimp, fish roe, a bit of Formula One flake, and some vitamins. Blend it all up and freeze into cubes. Mmm...Mmm...good.

What kind/size of tank do you feed sixteen cubes of Formula One to???

I feed two cubes a day to my nearly overstocked 90 gallon aquariums and that's PLENTY!

Fishfarmer's Reef Slop

First Batch was:

nori
shrimp
squid
clam
mussel
Artificial Plankton Rotifers

My next batch will contain garlic extract, vitamins and may add mysis, brine shrimp or sweetwater zooplankton. I do the chopping with a food processor. Get the cut and consistancy I want and freeze in shallow trays. Then wrap in foil and ziploc.

The recipie I use is very similar... whatever the local fish market has on sale the weekend I happen to go down there is usually what I use ;-). A couple of other things I've added to my batches:

Decapsulated Brine Shrimp Eggs

Selco

Golden Pearls

NaturaRose Astaxanthin Powder

Plenty of Phytoplankton

And a good bit of Nori

My fish have been happy with it for about a year now, and I've seen a slight improvement in color and general health. It could be I'm kidding myself, but they sure do look good. A lot better than they did when I was feeding prepared foods. I also went to great length's to make sure I was providing a variety - would buy 6-7 different kinds of frozen foods, and rotate their selection every night. Now I make sure I add 10-12 kinds of fish meat to my mix, and am assured they're getting a little bit of everything every time.

The 16 cubes is for several tanks, I feed 6 to my 120, 6 to my 105, and 4 to my 75.

It is getting out of hand.

I plan to add additional system soon and the food expense is eating me alive!

I have a recipe I use on my website. I should add I throw in extra stuff, like the leftover flake etc. at the bottom of a can...

I would love to try Borneman's recipe, but where on earth do you find sea urchin cubes ??

astaxanthin and canthaxanthin do wonders for coloring up fish, eggs, and flesh. At work we have noticed a stronger trout egg shell from using 22.7 mg/lb canthaxanthin added to our trout feed.

I made my first batch of food about two month's ago that my fish eat out of my fingers before it has a chance to get down into the tank. My mix is as follows; any small whole fish that is cheap at the market, shrimp, fresh squid, (from the chinese market in town) scallops, oysters, mussells, clams, dried nori, fresh spinach, any flake food that I might have, liquid Centrum multi vitamins and fresh garlic. The only time the Cuisinart comes out of the cabinet is when I do food for my tank, I blend each item until it is the size I want placing all ingredients in a large bowl, mix well and place in freezer bags, as I made a big batch I still have one full freezer bag left after 2 months. Anyone who can think of what fish eat in the wild can come up with a recipe, it all depends on your budget.

Henry,

Try clicking on the words "NaturaRose Astaxanthin Powder" in my post....

I got all of mine from Brine Shrimp Direct. Alternatively, you could try Florida Aquafarms, as they have lots of culturing supplies as well.

astaxanthin and canthaxanthin do wonders for coloring up fish, eggs, and flesh[/B]

Is there a common name for these substances.
Where is the most likely place to get them?

TIA

Aquatic Eco-systems, www.aquaticeco.com also has the NatuRose, plus other feed additives like spirulia, golden pearls, and Selcon. This is where I got my Aritficial Plankton Rotifers from. Their online catalog is kind of difficult to use though, some things are listed in the papercopy that I can't find online.

FWIW paprika will also color up eggs and fish, I'm not sure of the nutritional value though.
