My understanding is one halide per 2 ft of tank. If yours is 6 feet then you need three lights. Thats what i was advised when I bought mine and what I have seen posted...

The general rule of thumb is one per two feet of course. I am just currently putting in three spideys on a six foot, but it is a bowfront with crossbars. I suppose if I didn't have those to deal with, I would live with the two-lamp fixture I have right now, as it lights sufficiently, and leaves somewhat less lit areas on the ends for mushrooms and stuff.

The middle will still receive quite a bit of light, You could place the softies in the middle. I have seen tanks with 2 and there doesn't seem to be much light loss in the center. the reflectors make big differnce with lighting IMO.
