Cracking Glass!!!!!!!!!!

Hello guys,

I have a 29gal tank that serves as a sump right now. I just realized that a crack is developing from one of the holes drilled for a bulk head. Does anyone know if it is possible to stop this glass from cracking any further and how to do it?

Try and remove whatever stress there may be on the bulkhead fitting... i.e. heavy hose hanging off the bulkhead, etc...

Cut a small piece of acrylic or glass and glue it with silicone over the developing crack so as to prevent either side of the crack from separating any further. Make sure to account for the predicted direction of the crack as well and use a large enough piece to reinforce that area.

Never had the problem, but if I weren't buying a new sump for whatever reason, that's what I'd try.

Hello Mark,
I would think it would be safer to go and get a rubbermaid 30g container, just cut a hole in it and put your bulk head in there.

Hi Mark,

Switching to a plastic container would be your best bet. However, if you want to keep the glass sump the best way to stop a crack from spreading is to use a glass cutter to scratch a perpendicular line to the crack. This should stop it from spreading. Keep a close eye on it and consider Rubbermaid container instead.
