I have an encrusting gorg that I am not sure how to best treat. I will give my best explanation
icon_rolleyes.gif
of the problem and hope someone will understand what I am attempting to explain. The gorg is in a Y shape, on the end of one of the Ys is a 1" area that encicles the gorg, the color is purple (brown) and appears to be rotten. After this is a bright white area of about 1" followed by healthy polyps/gorg. I presume this is some type of infection, should I cut this area off? If so how far back into the healthy tissue should I go.
I wish I had a camera (like Mitch

), maybe he will send me and Tan one for Christmas.

Steve, this sounds like necrosis caused by physical trauma of some sort... Are the polyps still coming out on the necrotic area? Is it getting progressively worse? If the answers are no and yes respectively, I'd cut it off about 1-2 cm beyond the necrosis into healthy tissue.

Steve,
Is this the gorg that you have?

I agree with galleon, cutting back into the healthy area. I would add also that it would be a good idea to keep water circulation high around it. If you wanted to frag the remaining healthy area, you could strip back a couple cm of healthy material like garf shows on their site. (if I'm understanding your situation right)

BTW, even if we all chipped in and bought tan a camera, we STILL wouldn't see any pics!

Thanks guys, Galleon that describes it well, When I recieved it a couple of months ago it appeared to be injured on the end. The necrosis has moved very slowly and thats why I've been waiting to see what it would do.
Mitch, you just had to post a picture, you show off

. BTW, the picture you posted is a Pterogogia (purple sea blade) I think.

Briareum is not a gorgonian, however the similar looking Erythropodium caribaeorum is.
