My LFS has a big, beautiful galaxea, but it's display only, not for sale. I want one really bad and still have a large enough empty space for one. What's the best online place where I could get one? Preferably a place that also has SPS frags, gotta have a couple

Are there any special considerations with galaxea corals, other than the extremely powerful sweepers? Are they fairly easy to keep?

Thanks

I cant help you on care requirements, but you need at least 12" all the way around the coral. The sweepers are not only powerful, but very, very, very, very long.

I have a galaxea that had receded quite a bit in an underlit tank. I put it under MH and it's gotten all the recession back plus more growth!
For some reason, it doesn't send out the sweepers any more. I don't know how long this will last, but it's been over a year since I put it under the halides. (Yep, I even look at night!)
Try Premium Aquatics. I don't know if they have a galaxea but they have some nice, tank raised sps!

If you have a friend with a green one, ask them to break a couple of polyps off and then glue those to a rock and you will have your own Galaxia in no time at all.

Same here. I have had one in my tank for over a year now, and it doesn't really send out its sweeper tentacles anymore, except for feeding time. Mine is purple with silver tips, about the size of a baseball. For the record it's one of my lesser favorite corals, I have it placed in the back of the tank. Easy to care for, but a pretty slow grower.

Hi-
I'm from the College Station area and I could sell/trade you one in a couple of weeks when I'm there. I want to move it because of the long sweepers and a crowded tank.

I have read that you only need about 6 inches in each direction. I have never seen sweepers out past 4 inches at night when I look. I have mine on sandbed and it does fine under PC lighting.

Purchase places: Try Dr. Mac and sons or Atlantis aquatic. I Saw both of their stuff at MACNA XIII in Balt. Both had nice stuff (my preference was for Dr. Mac.) Both visit this board and offer tips too.

If you keep it well fed it will not send out the sweepers. This is only my .02. I have had minefor 3yrs. At first it sent out alot of sweepers at night. I began to spot feed it and the sweepers do not come out and it is huge.

Large galaxeans will propagate themselves by dropping individual polyps if the conditions are right. They are very easy to care for, and the only consideration I have for them is that they grow quickly, and they also are very aggressive. I have mine all up in the corner of my tank, and the water flow is adjusted so that they basically either flow to the overflow, or flow towards the front of the tank with the current, away from other inhabitants. I have 3 frags, one of which started as a single polyp around 4 months ago or so, and it now has over 20 polyps, and the colony is about the size of a 50 cent piece. I also have a colony which was shipped to me by accident by a MO place, and it is doing well, but the frags are almost as big as it already. Start with a single polyp, drop it into a hole in your rock where it can still get light, and in a few weeks, you should notice it growing, encrusting your rock. They grow very quickly, and IMO, it's kind of silly to buy more than 1 or 2 single polyps because of this (I bought the 3 frags for $15 from a LFS before, and would've gone with 1 polyp if I had known how quickly they grow).

How big is it and how much do you want for it? That would be easier for me than buying online.

Thanks for all the information.

The coral's about 4-5" in diameter, with sweepers extended another several inches it takes up quite a bit of room. I'm not sure how much to ask for it, $45? Email me off list if you're interested,
Lance
