Randy , I believe that is the line often given when large corporations take over competition .. Then the bean counters come in and see all those places they can increase profit ( can you say generous return policy) Hope you're right though.

This is bad for us! They bought out they online competition. I believe Petco doesn't really care for Aquarium business. Just like how they take care for their fish. I think it's good news for Moma and Pops stores and Thatpetplace too. Profit is in dog and cat food. Grooming ect, Reptiles and birds 3% and Fish your luckily 3% of they business. Mark my words they will be changes. I never heard of a take over to keep the identity of old store. They name is now on it. You think we will see same stuff on online at same price. Turkey is in the oven.... You think Petco is going to send me a catalog every time it comes out like LA.

Petco brought the whole business but the question is what did they really buy it for? My guess would be that they brought it for is the product online/mail order part and not so much the selling of the livestock part, which outside of the DD items, all comes out of LA anyway, and Petco is based in SD, so the sell side is already there. Basically it probably was easier to buy the infrastructure that Dr F&S & LA have setup, as opposed to creating it themselves, and in time they'll probably change the name to Petco, which is already a national brand name that people know.

Now they may keep the name LA for the livestock, and by acquiring Dr F&S this will give them more of resources into fish, but the the question is there any reason, or enough profit, to keep the place in Wisconsin open in the long run.

I think you are pretty much on point Mike. I'm told the sale has provisions built in to keep the Wisconsin operation going as it is the major (only) significant employer in that town. What those terms are I don't know, but the F and S and DD facility is not going anywhere in the forseeable future. The question for most of us " advanced" types -- if you are on a reef board you are "advanced" ---really becomes how heavy a hand will the new corporate structure lay on the day to day functioning of Divers Den.

Does Petco even care about the 'fish' business?
From what I've read, the main component of the acquisition is F&S's online prescription medication business - which is big.
Compared to the number of dog, cat and bird owners, what percentage of F&S's business was aquatic? They may have promised to retain the Wisconsin facility, but that doesn't mean it has to remain devoted to DD.

Anytime a horrible company acquires a good company there is the determination of the acquiring company to change the operations of said acquisition to streamline the process and make the ROI more important than customer satisfaction and to ignore what made the acquired company worth acquiring. A company I worked for Calumet was acquired by another company that placed its management cronies in key places (Ritz) and the result 4 years later? Complete store closure in NYC, PHILLY, LA, CHI, SD, and a host of other places. Bankruptcy! They then sold off their US assets to the highest bidders (More CLOWNS). I will say that the powers that be did insulate the European side of the operation and it still operates today.
Sad day for Foster and Smith!
