Is there any reason why you cant make a sump/fuge high instead of long? I have limited cabinet space and would like to increase the height as opposed to length and width. Just want to make sure im not missing anything.

Long tanks give you more ground and water surface are. This can be beneficial depending on what you are doing in your fuge/sump. If you are running a DSB a longer tank will have more contact time, more surface area will increase gas exchange, if you have a light above the tank you will be able to light up more algae in a long tank then high, it gives you more room to work with. If you put a skimmer in a 30 gallon tall there will be no room for anything else. A 30 long will give you room for a skimmer and area for more stuff.

A higher tank will be better then a low tank of the same length and width. If you don't have room to go longer going higher will be beneficial too.

As for the skimmer you can always raise it off the ground.
