I just had the same problem.. not thrilled while i'm waiting for my calibration fluid.

You can use it until you calibrate it. Compare the factory settings to your refractometer to get some idea of how off it is and don't base any actions on the probe until you calibrate it. And even then, it is probably best to not link any devices to the results.

I dont recall any of the probes coming with calibration fluid so when I ordered the module and probe, I included an order for calibration fluid as well.

no calibration fluid I had to order it. On retrospect, I would not order this again. It is difficult to interpret and as Josh said you should not make any adjustments or run devices based on its reading.

IMO a waste of money

can someone explain why this should not be used to run any device. I was planning to use it for an ATO on a system with an unusual design that doesnt have a spot for floats. I could set up a breakout box and float as an extra shut off just incase. but it wouldnt be an accurate way to top off. i am really hoping to use the salinity for top off.

but is this a bad idea?

I think the issue is that Salinity probes in general, not just the Apex are really finicky to calibrate and often go out of calibration. They are good for monitoring trends and giving alerts if things fall outside of set boundaries, but for controlling specific, precise parameters they are risky.
