JMO, but I believe most fish diseases are caused by stress and poor nutriation...the stress can be caused by many different factors from bulling to water quality etc....I did however read an article that the author believed that it can also be caused by carbon....but in my case I've been using carbon 24/7 for mannnny years and never had a fish develop HLL that I can directly relate to the use of carbon...

The cause of HLLE is still unknown but studies have shown that using carbon can cause HLLE. Especially finer carbon and/or cheap carbon. It's not yet a fact since it still hasn't been peer-reviewed but all signs point to carbon. Now before all the carbon users jump on my back, skimmers are said to remove most of the carbon. So my first question is what type of skimmer are you running? Also the hippo tang is doing great and the scars seem to be healing. Send me ur number again and i'll send you pic.

I always use Chemipure Elite.. then I decided to use marineland carbon(cost cutting)after months of use my purple tang developed HLLE..and this tang eats ocean nutrition seaweed twice a day eats like a pig.. I went back to Chemipure again and it's healing slowly.

Well good point on the skimmer, I know my skimmer is not big for my tank, I think that has to be my next upgrade, and yes I will like to get a pic of the hippo that I gave you, 9172577055 well about carbon types, I use the seacam carbon in a reactor,

I had a similar problem with HLLE and for a while I did not know what the problem was. The mistake I made was putting in the required amount of carbon that the manufacturer recommended on the container when in essence I should've used 1/2 of the manufacturer's recommendation.
Too much carbon is definitely a contributor to HLLE.

Here is a link to an article that may be helpful in the identification of other fish sicknesses. http://www.chucksaddiction.com/disease.html

I would love to see before and after pictures of fish that have healed from HLLE because I have not known this to actually be true. Also I run MASSIVE amounts of carbon and have for almost 8 years straight and my tangs are perfect.

Carbon can strip your water of essential nutrients which need to be replaced with frequent water changes this and a poor diet can cause hlle try varying the fishes diet with good quality frozen foods add selcon to your nori sheets this is a very good vitamin /amino supplement for thier diets you can also soak pellets in it i use new life spectrum pellets a couple of times a week my fish are very healthy

My purple tang is the largest and most dominant fish in my 180 gallon, although he is not constantly harrassing any of the fish. My water parameters are spot on, I use a grounding probe, I feed my fish a mixture of Rods, mysis, Ocean Nutrition pellets (blue and green bottle), New Life Spectrum pellets, Hikari pellets, and green/red algae sheets. I also add Selcon/VitaChem to the foods several times a week. Yet he still has HLLE and has had it for years.

I am at a loss. I do use the Marinland carbon so maybe I should switch that out and see if it has any effect on the HLLE.
