I feel black backgrounds make tanks look closed in. its really unnatural if you as me. With a large overflow it will definitely take away some of the eyesore the overflow creates.. I always shoot for a clear background with some rear light spill. Always looks great and gives depth.

Instead of painting it, why dont you get the colored vinyl adhesive that they make stickers out of? I bought a 24" x 30 ft roll of black on amazon from signwarehouse for under 27 bucks. It sure beats trying to paint glass and making a mess, plus its removable if you change your mind.

i agree with arimiko with the vinyl idea. i was even thinking about getting the vinyl printed with an "ocean depth" design/pattern (my cousin does screen printing and car wrapping). and if i dont like it, i still have the option to change

I had one of those plastic backgrounds you get at the LFS. I got the gel (mineral oil) to hold it on.... Well it started peeling and bubbling up and I took it off the tank yesterday. The wall behind is a light green, and I have to say I'm digging the tank without the background...

I get a mirror effect now on the back and can see my RBTA who sits back there from the side now. So much more depth. At this point I think I'll just wait for coraline to cover the back.
