only one 500w heater? how about instead of running the ranco through the apex, why not get another 300w and run the 500 on the ranco(in the sump) and the 300 on the apex (in the main tank). never hurt to have redundancy.
i have 3x300w finnex titanium with digital controllers http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/finnex-hmo-heater-w-digital-led-controller.html ...2 on the american marine chiller and heater controller and 1 on the rkl. 300g total volume... 2 in the sump and 1 in the tank....in case both of the return pumps fail.
my basement is 74-76 degree year round and the tank is 78 plus minus 1 degree.
