I am setting up a deep blue 57 gal rimless tank and I wanna go BB but everything I read says you have to oversize your skimmer but doesn't say how much I was looking at the Reef Octopus SRO XP 1000SSS
Which is rated for a 125 gal tank is this enough of a oversize?

I have the same tank, and I went with the bubble magus nac-3 and let's just say I have a "HEAVY" bio-load, and it's working very nice.
It's rated up to 80g I think.
The only problem with the skimmer is keeping the pump under it when you clean it lol... But I have a 3" sand bed too.

Why would going bare bottom require a bigger skimmer? I figure it's the opposite. Ever since going BB, the water quality is much better and easier to maintain. Most of the detritus collect and visible that it's easier to remove.

I don't use the SRO LX-1000S on my 29G anymore, I have a CPR fuge with macros and the live rock in the DT.

Before I went bb, I had crushed coral.

i think you need a bigger skimmer bc you need something to make up for the sand bc sand is a natural filtration in our tanks maybe someone with better knowledge can answer it im not %100

also what will happen if the skimmer is to big for my system?

The skimmers' output will not be consistent. In other words, your skimmer can't pull DOC's out of the water if the efficiency of the skimmer is such that it already removed the DOC's and your water is running ULNS. As you feed, your fish produce waste, your bacteria breaks down ammonia & nitrite, your skimmer will again begin to foam up with the nasty gunk you expect to see. Since your skimmer is 'too large' for your system, it just strips the DOC's faster than a smaller skimmer would, thereby creating a type of skimmer 'down time' while there is nothing present in the water for it to process.

Hope this wasn't too confusing.
