You would need a gear assembly that is run by a dual direction motor. Then you will need a ATO that is controlled by a timer device.

I think it just has a bucket that is slanted in the front and water reaches a certain level, the dump tank will empty itself. Just need the specs.

I have seen all those, the reason, I wanted to try the dump tray is because you don't have to have another big tank sitting on top of your display.

I used dump buckets on my tank 20 years ago... the splash and resulting salt creep made them unreliable and a PITA!
The extra tank /siphon are the way to go

What size is your tank? Can the tank and overflow handle the surge/ extra water?

I am designing a new 270g tank. Just want to figure out the best filtration and water movement.
Probably will go with the carlson surge device.

There's a reason why these devices aren't as widespread on small home tanks... They're a pain and can cause a lot of salt creep. You can get the same kind of "wave" action with a pair of vortechs or similar programmable pumps without the headache.

I guess but just trying to mimic the natural wave action and I think it looks cool too.
