Ambitious rookie here with my first saltwater tank and second attempt at the aquatic hobby since I gave up my cichlids 20 years ago in junior high.

Bought a Red Sea Max 250 last Fall. Eight months and more money spent than I want to think about, I have a pretty nice reef set up with lots of softies, SPS, LPS, and non-photosynthetic coral, along with a good stock of fish, crustaceans, and bi-valves as well.

Recently shelled out a bunch for a refugium and a chiller, now it looks like (I hope) there's only one more big purchase left: an LED retrofit for the hood.

On top of the major issues I've had with the hood, like a few short circuits from water getting in, iffy fans, noise, and the heat output for which I bought the chiller, it just doesn't seem like many areas in my tank are getting enough light for some of my coral to really thrive.

I've heard a lot of hype about LED conversions, but it seems like there are a million options and new technology coming out everyday. There's also a pretty wide price differential for the various options, packages, and kits.

Any RSM owners out there who have done this? Any recommendations?

A search in MR may yield couple mods that people have done.

This one is my work

The newer mods I did with the Light Brain is more graceful, everything looks the same externally and use the only power cord that comes with it. The major issue you will run into is there is only one power cord coming in and noisy fans that MUST do away with. The hood have enough room for most mod configurations.
