why do you want to leave the hobby? i'm sure there are people here that would lend you a hand (pun intended) till yours gets better, and going forward you'll know to be extra cautious and wear gloves.

question: why cant this be caught from the ocean? i've never seen people wearing gloves to the beach...

it can be caught from the ocean. i don't think it is uniformly present in all bodies of water. swim around with an open wound long enough and you'll likely get it. most things I read indicate that the most common cause of the infection in the US is from aquarium exposure. bacteria levels are probably concentrated in our little closed systems.

Not 100% sure Tony, but fish and inverts produce waste, feces, things that die and decay in our tanks. These things are a harbinger for bacteria to grow. Not only the good bacteria that we need as our biological filters but also some obviously not so beneficial bacteria.
