Hi everyone,

This years LIRA collecting trip is Saturday September 24th at Swan Beach Hampton Bays, we plan to be on the beach by 11A. We are also going to plan on a snorkel down by the Ponquogue bridge so if you're interested please bring your snorkel and fins.

Since parking is very limited please car pool if you can.

Maps and directions are on the clubs homepage, www.longislandreef.org

Hope to see you there.

Just out of curiosity, what is a collecting trip?

Every September the club goes out to Swan Beach and seines the Shinecock inlet for tropical strays, usually pick up pipefish, seahorses, spot fin butterflies, puffers and on occasion look downs; you really never know what you may pull up

Duke, no supplies really needed as we use the 40 foot net from Atlantis but bring a bucket and bubbler for holding anything you'd like to take home.

don't you need some kind of permit to do that?

"The fishing license was lifted after last years problems and anyone who bought one was/will be refunded their money. You do not need a license but at the moment they are trying to set up a national fishing registry. Either way you do not need a license to use a seine net as long as it is 20' or smaller. If you want to get a larger net you will need to look into a marine bait permit."

Hey guys

Answers to some of the questions?..

This event is open to all and we encourage people to join the club if they would like to do so.
No permits/licenses are needed and like turbo mentioned the fishing license was lifted.
How many show usually depends on the weather, on nice days we?ve seen 50 to 60.
Kids of all ages are welcome, we bring the seine net to shore so there is no swimming/wading required although the bay is very calm.
I do not believe there is any public transportation and we are encouraging people to car pool as parking is very limited.
