I can feel your pain with getting into the hobby when it comes to cost; but I love it. Believing others opinions as fact was another hard lesson for me. rushing into making purchases or buying new things that are the newest and latest fade I think we all have fallen victim to at one point or another. I now follow the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) method when it comes to reefkeeping which has always worked best for me in the past.

Not having a battery powered backup pump. Lost all my fish when the hurricane struck. Lost power for 4 days and by the time my LFS opened I came home to 8 dead fish ! Now I have one and no fish ! I felt like a murderer. Funny thing is, I think CathyC wrote an article about it and you would think I would go out and buy one, but who needs to spend $100 bucks on something you think you really dont need. Well, guess what, I lost about $700 worth of fish. Try explaining that to 3 year old twins ! Daddy, wher is Nemo and his girlfriend ?

Man sorry to hear about your losses. I too was hit in PA with the hurricane but not as bad. Lost power for two days and only lost some corals. I dont have a battery backup either but am now looking into something I could afford. It's tough too when the kids are impacted by the loss.

Because you spend 8.00 lbs or better for premium "live" rock and the you spend the next year getting those great new pest and predators out of your "new" tank
