My living room is about 15x17, hard wood floors. Windows almost always open. I have a 125 fowlr and i recently started smelling the ocean. Not a fishy smell. I dont have any covers other than some eggcrate to keep fish from jumping and i clean my skimmer every 3 days. What can i do to get rid of the smell. Also have a 40 sump uncovered.

It could just be really humid? I don't seem to have any issues... but yes please list what you are running.

Keep good water movement, run carbon, and keep the filtration strong and you shouldn't have an issue. Also maybe there's salt creep somewhere that is super heavy smelling?

Water change schedule?

I would run carbon in there at least a little to reduce some of the organics in the water and help with the smell but my guess is you probably need to do more water changes.

Do you have the UV inline with your return pump back up to the tank?

ESV carbon did the trick for me when this happened to me awhile back. normal carbon did not work, Chemi pure did, but expensive to replace, and now ESV carbon worked perfect for me...

How is your protein skimmer exhausting?
Does the air flow through a carbon stack?

This odor could be the air blowing across the condensed crap, actually what it is, in your skimmer cup and venting into your room.

i do atleast 10% water change a week. uv is on the return line, and i thought it could be the skimmate as well, that stuff made me gag the other day! the odor isn't terrible and it does remind me of being on the shore. i don't mind it that much, just don't want it to get worse. when the ceiling fan is on, you can't even smell it.

Not that it has anything to do with the smell but having an 18watt UV attached to the output of a mag 7 is just going to toast the algae and give it a nice bronze so it looks like it was on vacation. That flow rate isn't killing anything. You're at least triple what I would suggest running through that for that size tank and UV.
