Lets start with a little background info..

So about 3 months ago we started a new 75g tank. We bought everything from a break down and moved everything within a few hours, so we kept a lot of the water/sump/sand/live rock etc all from the 4 year old setup.

Everything was fine, no deaths... no cycle really. With the tank we got a beautiful 4 yr old ocellaris and thats all we had in tank for about a month (except snails, hermits etc) to make sure everything was fine. After about a month we added another young clown which within minutes paired up with our older clown and have been together since.

We have rescued 2 RBTA's which have double in size since and everything was doing great. We added a Royal Gramma, LM Blenny, fire goby,CB shrimp etc, and thats it and left everything to thrive for about 2 months... everything going perfect, levels etc all perfect.

So last week we added a yellow and hippo tang. Settled in well, playing with the other fish just fine... well its been about 4 days since we added the tangs.. again they are acting completely fine eating well and playing with the other fish just fine..

But this morning we noticed a white spot on Dory... 'uh oh, here we go!' within the day it is all over her body and spread to the yellow tang and gramma.

They haven't lost their color and are eating just fine right now. The clowns dont show any sign of ich either.

We don't have the means to QT any of the fish. So today i've been feeding them garlic marinaded mysis and keeping my fingers crossed.

I know its all part of the hobby, but our new tank is thriving and it just angers me that in adding a hippo a couple of days ago could wipe out the tank....

:(

Very prone to ich.... thats why I refuse to buy one. You may want to look into a UV sterilizer aswell. It does help and if you buy one use it immediately as it will be in the free swimming stage looking for hosts to infect. Wish you luck my friend... continue with the garlic to help boost there immunity.

Take a picture please. If they are eating please refrain from doing anything. Just boost their immune system and keep the tank stable. If it was just one white spot hay quickly spread check to see if there's anything that's throwing off the tank (ie. Temp flux)

My fish get it from time to time but it goes away. My Tangs were old and I still have them.

We don't have the means to QT any of the fish.

Then you should consider buying fish from a source that QTs them before sale. You can also set up a QT tank for around what that hippo tang cost. All you need is a moderate sized tank, a powerhead or two, a heater/thermometer and some PVC to use as hiding places. If you're not QTing coral, then any simple light will work.

30g Tank - Petco dollar/gallon sale or MR - $30
Koralia Powerhead - $25-$35
Home Depot Clip on Light - $10
Small heater - $10
Thermometer - $3
PVC parts - $5

Total Cost $83-$98

If space is an issue, then plan a water change the day you're buying the fish. Use the water from the display tank in the QT and once the fish is ready to go in to the display you can put the QT tank away until you need it again.

hey

Honestly I dont think Ich is really an issue, i see ich as a common cold for fish I've had a few times and as it comes it goes. I use garlic X every now and then to boost up my fish Immune system but other than that I really dont see ich as a real threat. As long as they eating they should be fine.

Use Garlic Guard when feeding your fish. They stay healthy.. ich is the easiest thing to cure. Fish get these if it's stressed or when their immune systems are weak... it's like handling a baby -_-

+2 it comes and goes for me to, my hippo is the only one that gets it, and it usually cause of some sort of stress e.g. add new fish. like most ppl have said just keep feeding them the good stuff, they should kick it naturally.

Thanks for the comments guys.

I know exactly what ick is and I have dealt with it many times before, I am not new at all to the hobby.

It just really annoyed me, as i've never had a hippo before and was worried it would wipe out the tank.

I'm pleased to report though that I have been feeding them real, natural garlic with mysis and they are all doing fine. The spots are starting to disappear

i wouldn't feel so confident just yet, crypto comes in cycles and could very well come back and get worse. Some people let it live in their tank without treating it and do fine, others do the same and end up killing most fish. Personally i've let nature take over twice. In one tank all my fish became "immune", in the other tank all but one fish died. Now all my fish go through quarantine, not only because of the fear of crypto, but also the fear of velvet, flukes and brook. I just don't like taking chances in this hobby anymore.

Just an update. We lost sight of our Fire Goby a couple of days ago and hasn't been since and the hippo died just now..

The yellow tang has being doing much better and it looking healthy now and the clowns and other fish are just fine..

Def won't be getting another hippo

Quick question, is it all tangs that are notorious for ich... or just the hippos?
