One of my clowns got ich and I'm setting up a separate tank for the hyposalinity treatment. I was wondering would it be advisable to treat all my fishes? My other clown doesn't show any ich symptoms and my yellow watchman doesn't either. But I'd like to try to eradicate this damned parasite from my tank.

Also curious, would my fire shrimp be able to carry the parasite?

Thanks

You need to QT all of the fish to eliminate the Ich from your display tank.
Your shrimp cannot get Ich. (nor can other inverts)

Read this for good info regarding hyposalinity:
http://atj.net.au/marineaquaria/hyposalinity.html

If the clown seems to have come down with a severe case of what resembles Ich, he may have Brooklynellosis...read that section of the same site as well, just to be certain what you are dealing with.

Thanks for the link. Its a good thing I have a refractometer for this, the low salinity level seems insane. I might bring my refractometer to my engineering lab to have it calibrated.

I read somewhere to use a power filter with a bio-wheel. I thought that was a no-no in saltwater unless its ok for fish only.

You can use a power filter in a QT it will take the food particles out of the water- do rememeber to clean those out daily .The downside is the QT tank WILL cycle as days go by so you really need to keep your eye on the ammonia levels and do water changes as necessary.

Don't forget to add a small heater and an air pump and airstone so the fish get plenty of oxygen.

search my name on MR and you'll see all the info of my hypo treatment and everyone's advice. REMEMBER THIS: Its not as easy as it seems the set up a Hospital tank. You need to be on top of params like pH constantly b/c you'll be doing frequent water changes. My Kole tang seemed to be doing ok in the QT until one morning he was dead. So the Ich might not have killed hi but something did...

Hey topmav1 I see your having problems with ichs as well from your posts. How is it doing? I'm planning a 10 gallon hospital tank as well with 7 gallons of new water and 3 from my display. I'll try to find a sponge to start the colonization of bacteria to put into the hospital as well. How is it going? I've read from several hyposalinity guides that pH is a problem due to the low salinity levels. Are you using any buffers? Or another one I heard was to bake baking soda and use that to raise pH when its low.

edit: Whoops I'm sorry for you loss. I hope that onyx is doing well.

Thanks

Hey Dude, while you are setting up your hospital tank, try to mix in some fresh garlic juice with the food and feed it to your tank. I was able to beat ich 2 times in the past with just that and nothing else. If the infected clown is eating, the treatment would solve all of your problem. (The 2 times I was able to beat ich, the fish were all eating at the time.)

if you beat it how did it come back for a second time?

The kole tang died as you may have read and personally I think the move alone to a seperate 10 gal tank really stressed him out. So I may get a lot of naysayers about this but i think he died more from the move then the Ich. In the main tank even though he had some white spots he was eating and swimming around normally. Once I put him in the QT it was downhill.

I set it up yesterday, put them in today. They certainly seemed stress out from the catching. I did it at night when I know there real drowsy. One of the clowns literally swam right into my hands, the other was much more aware and took hella lot longer. And nearly as long but ten times more annoying was the watchmen goby, I had to move all my rocks just to get to it.

The clowns don't trust my hands anymore lol when they see it then run, unlike before when they swam towards. I got a media basket from an old HOB for hiding but it seems the goby has decided its his. Will be doing a major water change soon before the start of salinity level dropping. I fear if I do it now while they still seemed stressed it would not bold well. Any suggestions on pH buffers? It is said that pH have problems at low salinity so I'm assuming water changes later on won't help.

Don't invest in a UV so quickly. Its not a cure for Ich and theres info on this site that talks about it. It also warms the water so unless u have a chiller...be careful running it now that the temp is warmer outside.
