Ill let someone with more exp. answer, but i would personally add more greens too the fish's diet, i have read that lettuce isn't even nutritional for salt water fish even though they eat it.

What else is he eating besides the lettuce?

How is your water quality?
Size of the tank?
Does he have peaceful tank mates?
how long have you had him?

if you tried all the food listed above and have no effect, try to put the fish in a quarentine and put metronidazole in the food for internal parasites, feed it 3 times a day for a week and see if the fish recovers, if not, find out if the fish come from the Philipines, weight reduction can be caused by cyanide poisoning, and if that is the case, all you can do is pray.

i dont think they use cyanide on tangs. fact is powder browns are finicky fish and from what i have seen have a dismal survival record. try nori and other algae to see if it eats it. you can also put some selcon on it to see if that helps.

Maybe the fish is depressed, try talking to him. On the serious note variety is a spice of life. Feed different food, make sure he has good hiding places and not too stressed out. Make sure other fish are not chasing him around.

there are 2 spots that most pet stores usually bring in their powder browns, Hawaii and Philipines. All Hawaii net caught powder brown are easier to take care of and does not waste away, Philipines are a hit or miss, and I'm sorry to burst your bubble, in some part of the world, they use cyanide to catch anything that swims, and I know that for a fact, not I don't think, maybe, or I wonder. Just trying limit down the cause so this person can figure out whats going on.

not bursting my bubble at all. i am just of the opinion that when people get fish that have a terrible survival record, and then kill the fish, the first thing they think of is cyanide, when in reality that is probably one of the least likely causes. it is even less likely if the fish is feeding as the OP states...

I've had the same problem with hippo tangs and once with a yellow tang. They'd eat everything- nori, ulva, gracillaria, flake, frozen, fresh seafood.....huge bellies on potato chip bodies.
In the wild these fish graze constantly throught out the day although some still starve to death in a home tank with a constant food supply for thatever reason. Here are the ones i'v had trouble with Clown Tang,Powder Blue, Powder drown and Kole Tangs.
