I had a hippo tang that had ich a little over 4 weeks ago he's been isolated in a med tank with cooper power for over 4 weeks now he looks fine and I was thinking about putting him back in. the fish that are in there now have no signs of ich for over 6 weeks I also added 3 green chromis about a week ago to see if they would get ich and they are fine no ich at all. I wanna put the hippo back in do u think he is ready for the dispaly tank again

i believe it takes about a month for the ich cyle to finish meaning falling off and dying out without a new host it should be safe but you have waited 4 weeks why not wait one more just as a precaution. by the way at what point did u noticed the ich was gone from the fish?

Charlie, you do realize that your tank may still have the ich/cryptocarions in it right. I have included a link on ich/cryptocarion just incase you haven't came across it before.;) http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2003-08/sp/index.php

No one here will be able to tell you that the hippo will not contract the parasites again. It has a better chance if the original tank had been left fowl for the recommended time frame of at least 6 to 8 weeks insuring that the parasites would all hatch & die without a host.

i have read that but taking apart my tank to catch the fish is outta the question .i understand that there is still a chance of the ich coming back .my question is what would u do in this scenerio should i leave him in the hosp tank long would this improve my chances of the ich not coming back any fish that are in the tank now have no ich and have had no signs of ich for the last 7 weeks

Charlie, I understand your question. Thing is that if we tell you "go ahead put him back in the tank", and then he gets ich again you will then turn around, and say that we misled you. It is a risk that you will have to take buddy.
You, and others here will hate my attitude towards a large tank full of fish, and 1 or 2 coming down with the parasites. My attitude when a couple of fish came down with it in my 155 was to let them be. I continued to care for my animals as usual, worried a bit, but the storng came through with flying colors where as the weaker died. That is not to say that I haven't treated fish with copper or other meds in the past.
BTW, my hippo was one of the 15 fish that did not get the ich.;)

That's was pretty much my plan of attack till I had a black out for 3 days then everything that had ich bad died except for the hippo he lived I caught him and put him in a hp tank. he has been in threatment for a long time he was covered in ich. I figured it can't hurt to treat him seperate .no other fish that survived the blackout . had any signs of it at all .I think I may put him back and see what happens
