If I bought tiny Saddleback clownfish and tiny Percula clownfish and put them in the tank together would that work out ok? The tank is 150g with no fish in it yet. Just sand and rocks. The clownfish would be the first fishes I put in there.

Tank is not cycled yet. I have had it up and running, but I don't have lights on it yet. I had some major malfunctions with my lights. I lost the ballast when I moved. Need to get a new one.

Can I at least throw a little chromis in there? Looks kinda baren in there.

You should be fine with the clowns and I would wait on a chromis. The clowns are a lot hardier than the chromis, so when the tank fully cycles they should be able to handle the changes. The chromis would probably die from the changes.

Regardless of what I am about to say, you should always provide them with the best conditions. Clowns are very hardy though. Mine have gone through ammonia/nitrate/nitrite spikes, temperature drops, HUGE salinity drops, etc... And yet, they never even show a sign of stress. It doesn't meant that they weren't stressed however; they cope well.

you should be alright, the sand and rock you have, is it live? in a 150, if you're depending on the 2 fish to cycle the tank, you have a loooong way to go, 2 small fish barely creates enough ammonia to start the cycle on a large capacity of water, but if you have a lot of patients, the way you are doing it is the safest way to go. Dont worry about the light, dosnt make too much of a difference now. Dont let anyone discourage here, you have to start somewhere!.

I don't get this at all. How could good advice be construed as discouragement? If you care about your animals you'll want the best for them. When I just got into reefing I was fortunate enough to go to a lfs where they strongly advised against getting even damsels until after cycling was complete.

HAlf of the sand was from my 55g sw and the other was live sand bought at the pet store. All of the rocks I put in there were dry rocks. I put a lot of shells in there though that have coraline algea.

I wasn't talking about the "good" advice, more of -Nooooo, from the previous post, it may scare people

Will be worth the wait in the long run. Dont look at it as I can get away with doing this now I think-go with yeah the tanks been ready for a while is about time I add to it. Your source for fish will always have another 1 or 10 of the types of clowns that your looking for. Let it fully cycle then start adding little by little.

This is just from my experience and not meant for anyone to follow. I have been doing this for over 16 years also and have a lot of experience. I never cycle a tank with live rock and I never use live sand. If you know what you are looking at and know the difference between cured live rock and uncured it goes a long way. Also you need an established tank besides the one you are setting up. You put new sand in the tank, Pink somaoa is my favorite. Add a handful of sand from your tank and it will take fish the very next day and corals. Doesn't mean you can do a full stock the next day but it does work I have done it about 6 times. No problems at all, but you need to know what you are looking for and at.

I used all of the water from my 55g. And threw all of the shells in from there too. I am not fully stocking my tank yet. I just want to order some clown fishies and have them ready for when my tank is cycled and then I can throw their cute little butts in there.
