you may already have ick in he main tank, that's where it was re-infected. you need to some how get rid of the ick there, because if you don't it's senseless to QT the puffer.

Move the puffer, and any other fish you have in your display tank into a QT tank for at least 8 weeks preferably 10.
Leave your display empty of fish for that time. This should give sufficient time for the ich in the display to run their cycle of life, and die off leaving your display free of ich for the return of your fish.
Drop the salinity in your QT slowly to 1.09, and I mean slowly! You do not want to kill the fish by going to fast with this. The ich cannot live in salinity that is that low.

Best of wishes with the recovery, and health of your fish.

Don't forget to feed your fish very well while in the QT. I would also soak their food in Selcon, Garlic extract, Vitachem, and Vitamin C. Most important of all keep up with water changes in the QT.

if u have fish in the main display and they dont show signs of ick it doesnt mean that all the ick is gone because ick can lie dormant in the tank for up to 2 months, but if there is no fish in the tank it will die along with the cysts and to be safe 2 months is enough time

I say leave him in the tank, all moving them to display tank is doing is stressing him out...if there are no other fish in your display, leave the puffer alone, try to best his immune system by feeding well, and keep quality water.

Just my 2 pence

I am not certain on the effects of copper on your particular puffer, so I will not tell you not to medicate it with copper.
What I will tell you is to do a little research on your particular puffer, and verify wether or not it can tolerate cooper medications. Some can, and some cannot!!
Funkmaster, I don't think you should make blanket statements. All animals are different. I also medicated dogface puffers with SeaCure a copper base med, and all went well with that one. Years later I treated a tank that contained another dogface, and a porcupine puffer, and both died. One immediately, the other the next day.;( No I did not overdose!!! BTW, using less then the recommended dose does nothing. I think you just got lucky with your's.
Rookie, if he is setting up a QT properly [meaning the water should come from the display, and gets the puffer to go into a container on it's own without chasing it around] before he transfers the puffer there should be no stress to the puffer. Leaving a very sick animal alone, and doing nothing to help it the chances are more then likely to end in the death of said animal. I do know people (and I have been guilty of this as well) that go with "Survival of the fittest". As I matured, and learned I found that this is not the answer.
