I added a coral beauty to my 55 gallon today. The only other fish in the tank is a bicolor psuedochromis. The bicolor is doing very well- eating, healthy and fat. When acclimating my coral beauty the pseudo got a look at the coral beauty in the bag and didn't really seem to care much. Upon release of the coral beauty, i cannot find the pseudo and he has not made an appearance. I have not seen the two fish interact, so I do not think there are aggression issues here. Did the psuedo just get freaked out by the new fish and is hiding? Will he ever come back out? Any ideas on where he may be?

Hmm..those pseudos of that kind are known to be incredibly territorial and for their size, very nasty. So, it's counter-intuitive to think that a newly introduced Coral Beauty would immediately become completely dominant over that pseudo. When you put food in the tank, there's no sign of the Dottyback?

Well, that's too bad. I wish I had a nickel for every fish that's just inexplicably disappeared into the rockwork of my reef, never to be seen again.

Arg! I really liked that little dude...oh well i hope he comes out sometime....i still have hope  he was doing great, i dont know why he would just decide to go off and die.

well...at least he was cheap. Better he get lost in the rocks rather than the coral beauty, which was such a pain to find btw.

Hey there -

slow down a touch - it is not uncommon when adding a new fish for things to get shaken up a bit - sometimes that means fighting a bit till a new pecking order is set, and sometimes it means that a fish or a few fish "disappear" for a while to adjust to the new arrangement... If your fish is gone a few days, it may be safe to assume the worst - if your fish is mia for a day, it's not time to give up yet.

Don't flood the system with food to lure him out - feed normally. Don't take the rock work apart looking for it - if it's dead, that won't change, and if it's hiding, it needs to hide till it's ready to come out.

Give it time :)

hopefully, the new status quo will be two fish, happy - just give it time

Best of luck!

+1. Well said.

My purple pseudo hid a bit when I added my Blue Throat. It is now out and the whole tank is getting along great. It can take a few days. Be patient and good luck ;)

He appeared this morning! He is almost back to normal but still occasionally goes into short periods of hiding. He appears to be afraid of the coral beauty.
From what I read about pseudos I thought I was going to have aggression issues with him, but I guess I got a coward pseudo, guess I got lucky with this one :bablefish.
Anyone got tips for getting a coral beauty to eat?:splitspin
