Hypo salinity treatment is the way to go, put the fish in a QT tank and change out 20% of the volume every 12hrs until your salinity reaches 1.009 and then keep it there for about 4 to 6 weeks. As far as the DT goes, (white spot ich) will die off in about 6 weeks as long as there aren't any fish (Hosts) in the DT , (Black spot ich) will die off in about 4 to 6 months with out a host. Also note Hypo salinity cannot be done with inverts and certain types of fish but is OK for your Hippo, also it's not recommended to be performed on your DT either as there is a chance of killing off your nitrifying bacteria & LR.

Hippos can certainly survive! Follow steps above, or treat with copper(my prefer way to go since it is a faster cure, but you must proceed with Extreme care with that one.:)). And feed him very very very well add vitamins & garlic extract to the food & even vitamin C. Make sure to check parameters in the QT, and do constant water changes as needed. In a qt those water changes are of paramount importance so keep up with them....................................
All the best!
Keep us posted on your success.;)
