They can be easy if you get a healthy specimen to begin with. A large tank with few tank mates, good water quality and their nutritional needs are met.

clown tangs need at least 180 gallon tank.like all tangs they are prone to ich..quarantine is a definate before putting them in a setup.they get quite large and they never slow down always swimming.yes they are beautiful but if you dont have a large tank for them leave them alone..JMO

Clown tangs are very aggressive and only get more aggressive as they get larger. They require big tanks, nothing less than 6'. You need to be very careful mixing them with other tangs as even small ones will attack, and in a lot of cases, kill other tangs. They're not easy to keep, as most don't adapt well and usually die. Smaller ones do better but they're still hard to keep. They're a very high strung fish and usually spend a lot of time going after other tangs.

As for Ich, they're not an ich magnet like PBT and usually don't bother corals anymore than any other tang.

i had one that was ~2". did not have problem with ich. it was in a 75 gal. reef tank with a 4-5" purple tang with no problems. did not bother corals....other than having to remove the clams, feather dusters, and tuxedo urchins before he made them into expensive snacks. ate everything put in the tank. love large freeze dried krills and fresh clams on the half shell. the kids loved feeding him.
but when he got to be about 4-5", mr. hyde emerged. he was chasing everyone and biting their fins.....didn't kill them but made it known he was the new sheriff in town. eventually it was too much torn fins and cutting themselves up on the rocks while chasing around, he was given away to an aggressive fish only tank. he came right into the net to eat but bit thru the first one and escaped. caught him the next day using a heavy duty pond net. last i heard he was almost 8" and got along fine with other big aggressive fishes in a big 300+ gal tank.

cali_reef had one for about 4+ years. It was about 6" and was so aggressive that it literally sliced up a 7" sohal. When cali was breaking down the tank for his move, the clown would actually try to slice his hand also.
Clown was in a 180g then into a 300g.

Right on the spot, my man Mike!!

Just FYI, I tried about 6 (all different sizes) before I got one that ended up staying with me for 6 years. Clown #8 died a few days ago, after a 5 day battle with ich.
