I have a 90g and a 3" yellow tang. he's been in there for a year and i want to add another one.

I heard that if you have a tang in the same family (ie: yellow and sailfin) they will fight. Is this true?

I was looking to get a baby: Naso, Blue powder, hippo, or sohal.

thoughts?

Ill get flamed for this by the tang police LOL I have 2 hippos--yellow--atlantic blue--sohal--sailfin--and a scopas all happily living together and all added at different times. Expect some aggression initially and try to make the new comer a litle bigger than your existing yellow tang. Rearrange some rock work if thats possible if not dont worry about it.

A 90gal is to small for a Sohal tang, even a small one, which will out grow it very fast. Its' also a very aggressive tang as it gets larger. The same with a Naso, as they need a good deal of swimming room to do well and a 90gal is just too small. A Powder Blue tang can be trouble something, as can some Yellow tangs, so you are taking a chance, not to mention that Powder Blue tang are ich magnets. A small Hippo would probably do well for sometime and most other tangs seem to leave them alone, they are ich magnets too so you need to be careful. You may also want to look at one of the Ctenochaetus tangs, like Kole, Chevron, Tomi and other similar Bristlemouth tangs.

Out of the tangs you listed, I'd go with the hippo. I have had great success keeping them with other tangs. They seem to not bother other tangs and other tangs seem to leave them alone.

No matter what tang you add, I would expect the yellow to take some aggression out on the new tang. Keep the lights off for a day and let the new guy settle in. With the yellow being in there first and for over a year, I'd avoid getting any tang of similar shape (atlantic blue, scopas, black, purple, sailfin)
