they are a good reef fish but they will eat anything they can fit in their mouths. They sometimes take some time to eat mysis and will need to be fed ghost shrimp
Brian, Reef Safe is a relative term. If your tank doesn't contain any fish that can fit in it's mouth than yes, it's reef safe as far as you are concerned. They won't eat snails or hermits but they will eat small to large shrimp. Keep in mind that they can eat items almost their own size. Some get to be larger than a regulation football. They also move along the substrate so any coral on the rocks or on the sand is subject to becoming a perch.
They are relatively harmless to corals but they will eat any fish or invert that can fit in their mouth as mentioned earlier. You will need to spot feed them frozen shrimp and fish (that is if you can get them on frozen foods). If they don't take frozen foods you will have to feed them live foods and they do eat a lot. I have also found they prefer to eat your expensive fish first
As far as mysis and ghost shrimp, that will work for very small anglers but if fed properly they grow fast.
So in short, they are not easy to feed as they will need to be spot fed even if you are lucky enough to get them eating frozen foods. They also require a lot of food and mysis and ghost shrimp are not the best options. If you do not have other fish or inverts in the tank or you don't care if they become food, they are reef safe
They are worth the effort IMO. Just making sure you know what keeping them entails so you can make an informed decision that suits you best They are definitely more work than most of the traditional reef fish.
I'm with Dom, they are very cool and worth the effort to get them eating. There are some REALLY nice ones out there and watching them try to act like a rock or floating piece of debris never gets old.
i have a flame angel and is a model reef citizen so far.. from what I know though.. they might be good when they are young till they reach adult stages and can turn on you
Read the whole thread and I still think this is about a anglerfish... I'm lost.. I have a 3/4in red angler that eats pods and once a week a minnow form petland.. I know that's not really good for them but I will get some killies later on today hopefully they will be small enough..
Here's my .75in angler that I've had for the past 4 months.. So small it's hard to take a decent picture and he never gets to close to the front glass.. This in my old sump as I'm in the process of setting up a new system now..
