The 'book' says they tend to be beaten up by other Hawkfish. The are also jumpers, so if your tank isn't covered a Long Nose isn't the right fish for you :(

had to bring this back from the dead...

well its been 3 months now and both the long nose hawk and flame hawk are doing great...

perfect example of what might not work for others will work for u. or vice versa.

they are both eating like pigs and never ever fight with eachother.

That's great! :) Both are wonderful fish, have any pics?

...just goes to prove that fish don't read books ..lol
Now if we could just find out where those people writing those books are getting their info! ;)

haha yea u r correct aftyer speaking to you i decided to take my chances because they are both shaped very different from one another... My Rebel broke so i only have a crappy phone camera... if u want some shots ill take em in the morning.

yea someone else also read a book and said no other wrasses if you have a dragon wrasse well i have a carpenters wrasse, fairy wrasse and small xmas wrasse along with a yellow coris... and my dragon doesnt even bother em. he is more into moving rocks lol and they all get along great.. sometimes they are fun to watch b4 bed because 2 of them tend to bury themselves right next to eachother lol...

I've turned into a big fan of the long nose hawks myself, at times I wonder who's watching who; still trying to figure out if they paired up but at least they get a long.

ive had a flame hawk for 6months in my reef last yr now he is in a fish only tank... i had a rbta in the reef and the hawk never went next to it. o i highly doubt they eat anemones.

ive never seen mine attack shrimp or crabs either... i dunno but im the type of person that likes to see it for themselves also not every fish is the same. id personally take my chances because i would think the anemone would shock him if he was bothering it. i say go for it. if anything hawkfish are pretty easy to catch since they like to lay on the upper levels ... aka my mag float lol

I had a Flame Hawk in my reef and it was a huge mistake. It was okay for a few weeks, but if you plan on keeping crabs and shrimp, your hawk might play with them and tear them up. I found my skunk cleaner shrimp (a big one) convulsing on the bottom of my tank with a big bite mark in it from my flame hawk.

Of course, you never know what might happen, sometimes they exist and never bother anything (especially if you feed them well and often).

Hi Duke
I would be more worried about the carpet anemone eating the long nose. They hop around because they don't swim. I do know that they eat shrimp, they don't care if the shrimp is big or not, they will bash it against a rock and eat the pieces.

They have absolutely no interest in Anemones whatsoever. Shrimp could be at risk. I'd also note that the 2 species mentioned here ( the flame and the longnose) are far and away the the mildest least problematic members of the hawkfish family. The others are generally very mean and aggressive.

also i forgot to mention... when the hawk was in my reef he did tend to lay on my acans, zoas and other corals occassionally and get the corals irritated....

Past tense? Do you have them in a FO now?

Duke..my Coral Hawkfish lives in a tank that only has anenomes in it..no issue there as Randy states. :)

I apparently got lucky as he doesn't bother the clowns who are smaller than he is, but the majority of shrimp don't stand a chance with one in the tank, he disassembled every one I put in there :(
The only shrimp who has been safe with him is the Banded Coral shrimp, but the CBS is MUCH bigger than him.
