i have a 4 inch yellow tang and a 5-6 inch hippo tang that i just introduced last nite.

i noticed they both rubbed there back tails against eachother. i was wondering if this is how they fight or????

this am i check the tank and they are perfectly fine sleeping rite next to eachother... so im just wondering what could the back fin rubbing be all about?

TIA...

I have a yellow and a hippo too been together for a year with no problems. However I introduced a second yellow and the original yellow started to chase the new guy and the hippo around the tank. He would rub the tail and I noticed damage to the hippo's tail. Decided to trade the yellow away. Now everything went back to a peaceful enviornment.

tangs have scalpel on tail, thats why they are sometimes referred to as surgeon fish
It's a sign of aggression usually starts out with full extension of fins and if there is no sign of the other fish backing down than they display the tail and it escalates I've been cut with it they are sharp and do cause damage

When a new tang is introduced, you will see this type of behavior from tangs. I usually leave the lights off for a day when I add a new tang. It seems to keep aggression down.

Anyway, this usually only lasts for a day or two and then they get along after that. At least from my experience.

what i did was put a mirror on the side of my tank for a few days and slowly every day i would decrease the hours the mirror hung for.within 3 weeks the mirror was gone and the fighting between the 2 tangs went away.and if they start up again hang it again.
