I always wonder with all the battle we fish keepers have to fight with ich. just how much is a Ich free fish worth to you people. For example how much do you feel a 4" Powder Blue will worth to you if its Ich free!! For it is a ich magnet. i would like some opinion from you keepers

I went through 5 Achilles before I was able to get one that survived all of the following and placed into my 120g that has not displayed any diseases yet.
1) quarantine x 10 days
2) treat with Prazi-Pro x 7 days
3) treat with Cupermine x 14 days (cause all tangs have ick )
4) after a month of QT & treatment & they still eat, then you are golden :)

So essentially, I guess I paid $600+ for an Achilles that is doing awesome.

Receiving a fish ich free does not guarantee that it will remain ich free in the hobbyists tank. The stress from the LFS or handler to the final destination could be enough stress to induce a weakened immune system.

JMO :)

that's assuming there is ich in the persons tank. no ich on fish, no ich in tank = no ich.

there are articles out there that have strong support on ich free condition in tank with no matter what kind of stress, No ich mean can't get infected even if is weaken. you might get other kind of infection but long as you have a ich free tank then your fish can't get infected long as you don't introduce any to your tank. these are just some of the facts i found out about ich during battles with ich. so any body thinks my ich free powder blue worth somthing?

It should be priceless to you! :)

Who is to say that a fish is truly ich free?
How many times have you looked at one of your fish and said 'uh-oh, looks like he might have ich' only to find no signs of it at all the following day. What is to say it wasn't a trophont that fell off the fish while you were sleeping?

Trophants often settle into the gill of the fish first..again..who is to say that the fish doesn't have a single one and it hasn't yet multiplied to the point of being visable to us?

I truly believe there are some fish (outside of the ones that aren't prone to it) that will never get ich even if directly exposed to it. Almost like your friend, sitting next to you outside, gets eaten up my mosquitos, but you don't get a single bite. Maybe some fish just don't taste so good..eh? :)

I think it is virtually impossible to 'guarantee' that a fish is ich free :(

IMO many of the quarantine thats are set up will only add stress. I don't see any point in putting a tang in a 20gal etc... Today 01:43 AM
I have to agree with this kind of logic! :)

LMFAO...

Give me your ich filled fish.. I'll put it in my system and he will either die from being stressed too much already or live... I won't even worry about it giving ich to my fish,,, I don't have to.. Even in my close to close $3000 worth of fish system.. Ich means stressed out fish aka ST.... Reevaluate your system.... And I don't have the best system, but I haven't had ich in a while...

And I'll take that gamble because I feel like I have it figured out a little,,,,lmao..

to me i feel the battle any one have to wage with ich is just too much. i took out a hipo blue tang that was in copper for 1.5 month in to a new set up tank with out having fish ever in it. it came down with ich 3 days after entering the new tank. maybe 2 or 3 months is the magic number for ich free but who is willing to go through putting their fish in poison for so long. maybe bob is right keeping your fish healthy is the way to keep ich in check. i guess long term solution is to keep a check and balance with fish and ich.

I feel that good husbandry plays a large role in being able to care for and keep a fish free of parasites. a proper diet for the fish plays a role as well. just because a fish is a carnivore does not mean that it wouldn't benefit from a few "veggies", and vise versa.

Lots of good advice from everyone. My personal experience is my my tang and my Venutus Angel picked up a signs of ich. I truly believe it is always present. Well that being said, it was time to search for the cause (stress(new fish), water conditions etc.). What has seem to work for me and may on several occasions, is not do anything drastic to cause additional stress. My general protocol has been a 20% water change, added my UV light, garlic boost in the water, and garlic soaked food and lower the lighting conditions. Within a few days, things are better and there are no signs of ick. Now is it gone, probably not, but I believe I have removed the factors that triggered the outbreak and the fishes immune system is able fight it off.

I also had a hippo tang, that would get ick once in awhile, and same procedure worked on him. Not sure about powder blues. Hope that helps.
