Hey everyone,

I just got this Foxface Lo from Daceman89. It is the friendliest fish I have ever seen. I remove the light to put a new bulb in and he comes to the top of the water. Spines are down but he is just keeps putting his mouth over the top of the water. I'm not sure how to feel about this. I think that its great that he is friendly but could this be bad say if I need to do something in the tank?
LMK what you guys think.

I don't think it matters how friendly it may appear, it's still toxic.

You may need to get some of those gloves http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=3871

A vendor here must have some, ask in the want to buy forum

I wouldn't say "highly toxic" like you should have 911 dialed on your phone when ever you decide to do maintenance but nonetheless I would imagine getting stung is to fun.

JW what are you feeding him?

edit: also forgot to mention, don't freak if he changes color, they do that.

I've had them for years. great eaters, pickers and super friendly. They grow real big real fast. watch out for those spines though very poisonous. they also at times get freaked out if suddenly you put something in the tank near them which will cause the spines to come out. Great fish though. I'm a fan.

how toxic

just bought a rather small foxface so i had the same question. my friend had a pet store in queens for many years and sold "tons" in his words. he said he never had a customer stung in all his years. he was stung because as an owner you forget what is in what tank. he said it was like the worst hornet/wasp sting you can imagine. he also said you literally have to touch the foxface it will never attack only run and put out spines as last option for protection steve

Just like Lion fish a Foxface or Rabbit fish will stick out their spines when they feel threaten. Most of the time people get stung when they place their hands in the tank and forget where the Foxface or Rabbit Fish is. At night Foxface or Rabbit fish will hang in the water with their spines sticking out, making it very easy to get stung, especially if you don't figure out where they are in the tank before you place you hand in. People probably get stung the most when they go to move the Foxface. At some point the person will touch the Foxface and if they're not careful get stung.

The sting is very similar to a Lion fish sting but a lot depending on your allergic reaction to it. For some people it's not bad but for others it can be very bad. Most Foxfaces that are sold are small,2"-6", as opposed to the larger ones, 8"-12", which probably pack a much stronger sting.

<--------- I take notice of him before my hand goes in the tank. He stays away from me, but I wouldn't want to surprise him.

There was a guy in either Brooklyn or Staten Island who was hospitalized after being stung by a fish last year. I think it was a rabbit fish, but may have been a lion fish.

From www.marketmanila.com :http://www.marketmanila.com/archives/samaral-rabbitfish-spinefoot
"I have only eaten fried Samaral or Spinefoot or Rabbitfish. Its skin sometimes has a weird texture when fried but the flesh itself is firm, clean tasting and great with vinegar or other sawsawan. These specimens were from the Batangas market the other weekend and you can see from the eyes just how fresh they were (clear eyes, fresh fish, most of the time). An incredibly thin fish, my previous post on Samaral suggests they come from the same family as danggit (talk about anorexic sea dwellers) which are, well, FLAT … Nevertheless this is considered a sort of premium fish in the markets today and at PHP140 a kilo it was pricier than some of the other choices in the market. It is found in waters from the Philippines through Indonesia and onto Northern Australia. I almost always consume at least one whole fish for myself since the meat to bone ratio is relatively low… "

But I never had the ones we keep as pet though. :shhh:
