Does anyone know if mating 1 wild True percula and 1 tank-raised true percula is possible? I recently purchased 2 small true percs from LiveAquaria. One of them died and then so did its replacement that they sent to me with free shipping as a one-time courtesy, these deaths are killin me. So now I have only 1 wild true perc (and it's awesome) but I still want to pair it up while it's small. A LFS is getting in about 20 tank-raised true percs this week and I don't know if it could work. I'd love to get another one from Liveaquaria but the shipping is more expensive then the fish.

Any Ideas?

Thanks!

Just make sure the one you buying is smaller or larger then the one you already have, If they both the same size they will fight until one gives up and stays the male.

Good luck with the next one.

Clowns

I had the same thing happen to me five years ago with no anemone in the tank. One died and the other was using a feather duster as a host. I put in a ritteri and everything changed. Do you have an anemone? If not, I would get a Ritteri anemone. Let the current perc get acclimated to the anemone for a couple weeks then add a second slightly larger one. I found that if you put the smaller fish in second, the larger one may bully him around with bad results. I had good results using the small then large method, or Both fish at the same time with several types of clowns. Some other folks may have done just the opposite and had good results as well. BTW mine have been mating regularly since and i recently was able to collect some eggs and have them hatch. Be kind and please don't shoot the messenger. Thanks Mr.Softy.

Mr. Softy,

Beautiful anemone, bad advice IMO. Knowing nothing about his/her system, you really shouldnt recommend someone get an anemone, much less a ritteri. Those are harder to keep from what i understand. Clowns DO NOT need an anemone to be happy, they'll be just fine without one. Chances are if it's just two clowns they'll be just fine with each other regardless. I got mine on the same day, both about the same size and from day one, one beat on the other. The one doing the beating of course turned out to be the female.

Just saying don't advise things without knowing the tank setup first.

i got my true percs at the Swap from Russ aka swimmer with an anemone and they LOVE it

also I have another tank with some clowns with multiple anemones and they all love it. I find it keeps them from rubbing up against any of the other corals

but you are 100% right you must know a system to know if they can suport an anemone

Marki, I originally picked up a pair at BTJ's Jungle in west islip. Only one survived after 48hrs. Two weeks later i picked up a larger one from Don Gortner in coram with th ritteri. The rest is history. He occasionally gets shipments of about 30 or so small ones. The last batch he got was amazing. They were some of the nicest marked fish that i have seen in 30yrs. I was tempted to pick up two more and sell mine.

After looking at your gallery dabgood, i can see that you have some knowledge of reef keeping. But i spoke to soon and nano is right. It doesn't look like you have even enough room to keep an anemone in that beauty. Sorry for the bad advice. Softy.

Did your clowns host anything? Did they ever laid eggs and or make out? Are the clowns happy now after they determined who is female and who is male?

Yes they do host an RBTA. Got the RBTA way before i had clowns, probably a few months at best. Never laid eggs, they're probably 4-5months old now. They took 5 weeks to host and I've only had them for like 2 months.

Yes they are very happy from what I can see. No making out either, I'm not a fish perv ;)

Watching fish make out is only documentary, watching human being make out is another thing.:inlove:

If i collect another batch of eggs from the Percs is there anyone who is experienced in breeding that would like the eggs? All i ask in return is a few fish once they have developed past the fry stage. Or maybe a little coaching in fry development would be nice. I got them to hatch twice with no survivers after a week.

I don't want to take up any more space on DaBgoods thread so i wll leave you with this note. I tried frozen Rots. Didn't work. I realize that i'm going to have to get some live plankton to make it happen. There is a kid out here on the island that raises live stuff that i will try next time. If you have any other advice, feel free to send me a PM. Thanks.

Try a large hairy mushroom. My Clarkii clowns hosted a colt coral. My Percs host a giant hairy mushroom, it is in the anemone family and it is easier to care for IMO.
