Hey everyone, My emperor died this morning after some strange behavior that began last night. First he began rapidly swimming aimlessly around the tank he then just layed under the rock arc and was rapidly breathing but from only one side of his gills where he just stayed until i found him dead this morning. I checked my water parameters everything was great and his tank mates are all doing fine. He never seemed sick until lastnight sucks because this is one of my favorite fish guess i'll pick up another one this weekend maybe I'll try an adult this time.

Is this 3 weeks from the dealer or 3 weeks out of QT in the display tank? Where did you get it from?

3 weeks?! Hopefully it's not an internal parasite which could now infect your established fish.

I agree. I would wait a few weeks before pulling the trigger on another one. Observe your other fish carefully for the next few weeks. You can always add another, but to subject another beautiful fish to a potential parasite or disease would be a horrible fate.

I would wait longer, and QT anything that you buy from anywhere.

I'm not sure how many Angels or Tangs you bought before but I can tell you this. That sort of thing happens all of the time. I M O it is the very reason why you have more Reefers than Fishers. After a while - you will come to the knowledge that it is hit or miss and nothing else you can do about it. These fish come from pristine ocean waters then all of a sudden they are snatched by some diver. It could be poison, it could be rough handling, it could be ammonia burn while being transferred from one distributor to another, it could be stress - then again, it could be all of these! Expensive salt water fish like Angels, Tangs and Butterflies are the most sort after and they are also the most inclined to just start swimming eratically and then do the crash and burn dive. I challenge anyone to disagree with me in good faith.

I'm not sure what you consider in good faith but you'll find that a lot more people have much greater success keeping saltwater fish than corals, and for more much longer period too. You'll find people keeping fish for 5, 10-20 years will less than great water quality, unlike reef tanks where even the slightest change in water quality can wipe out a whole tank, especially sps. You'll find it's much more hit or miss keeping corals than fish.

You'll find that, except for hard to keep fish, most fish are easy to feed and over time become very hardy are last for years, something that you can't always say about corals.

The amount of time, equipment and knowledge that goes into keep a reef tank far out weights what goes into keeping a fish only or fowlr tank, not to mention the success rate in keep fish is much higher than corals. Because of this you'll find a lot of people getting fed up with keeping a reef tank and wind up going back to a fish only or fowlr tank. You can't go by this board, or Reef Central, but you'll find that most people out there are keeping fish only or fowlr tanks, as opposed to reef tanks, or in time go back to fish only or fowlr tanks.
