I was in the city yesterday visiting my family and decided to take a trip to the Union Square Petco; I hadn't been there in over a year. I was really surprised as how clean their tanks and fish are now; clerk claimed that they are getting their fish from a different vendor now. What really caught my eye was these two huge Purple Tangs they had there! Each one was at least 6" long and the colors looked amazing! I ended up buying one for the grand total of $90 bucks:thrash:.....

We at MR don't buy at Petco for many reasons but good luck with your purchase.Looks good though.

To be honest I personally know a few friends on here that purchase from Petco all the time. All the fish that are in my 75G reef were bought at Petco and have been thriving for over a year now. You just have to know what you're buying. I tend to observe the fish for about an hour before making my purchases from them.

I was at the PetCo in Union Sq last weekend and I wouldn't buy any of the fish from their fish tank, let alone even take the chance of putting one directly into my main tank without a long QT process.

I also saw the Purple tang last week and even though the colors were nice all the other fish in the tanks were scratching and a couple had died. I also remember the Purple tang being more than $90.

The only reason why it went directly into my display is because I'm currently running hypo salinity; another thing is that I don't believe in QT. They also keep cooper in their tanks which can explain their scratching; this tang did not scratch itself while I was there. Also, the reason why I paid $90 was because I simply asked the clerk for discount and he gave me $20 off.

No the scratching that you see is from all the diseases that their fish have. The level of copper they keep in their tanks isn't even high enough to kill ich let alone to make their fish scratch. Also Hypo only works against ich and not other diseases, which may of their fish carry.

I would personally never get anything live from a petco but you seem to have better luck with it then me with all those fish in the 70

I guess I took my chances? Have been doing the same for over 2 years and never had a problem.I know that hypo is only effective against ick.

My Hippo Tang, which I bought at a dime size, two Percs, and many other critters have been with me for over three years and they were all purchased from Petco at Union Square. And I will continue to purchase from there as long as my boy Wayne is taking care of me:thrash:.

Great fish. I almost brought a fish from Petco in Union Sq as well. I was there this month and it was much better than it was two years ago when I first visited the place.

Great find and a discount to boot.
