I went to feed my fish, I looked down to check out my friend in his Den that he has hung out in for the past two years and he was not there. I new something was wrong. I looked on the side of the tank, on the floor. There he was. He must have been there for less than an 1/2 hour. I wonder what made him want to jump to his death?????

I have read that Jawfish like to jump, I thought after a couple years with no attempts at jumping he was gonna be ok.
I would like to get another type of Jawfish or a fish with similar building behaviors, (not jumping behaviors) any suggestions? Is there a particular cover I can use on the tank that will not cut down the light penetration. I heard of people using plastic crate type materials.

my last 120 setup i had a strand of chaeto flow into my overflow box, ultimately it overgrew to mass proportions,,,

Both mandarin and jawfish managed to get over the overflow box and die because the chaeto grew above the water level... didnt figure it out till I redid the tank,,, :( guess it happens.

Be careful with "eggcrate" covers. It is simply a 2'x4' flourescent light diffuser, made of plastic, that you cut to fit. I had a blue-dot jawfish for several months with a glass canopy. Within a few weeks of removing the glass and replacing it with eggcrate(which many said would work) my blue-dot jumped to his(her) death. It typically works well, but it's not perfect. That was a $150+ lesson.

I think your best bet is a decorative wood canopy, possibly even open top. I just don't know how high they must be to contain a jumper.

My only problem is that I have a 92 gal. bow front with an outer orbits fixture hanging over top of my tank. Im thinking a canopy would be pretty tough to fit in between the tank and the light fixture.
