I have a fowlr, Does the negative aspects of a UV still pose a threat?

IMO yes. It too will give you a false sense of security for some of the same reasons as the diatom. If the ich doesn't pass by the light (when the light is operating at full strength i.e sleeve is not dirty, water isn't moving too fast)..then it won't kill the ich.
What a UV does is kills bacteria. Indiscriminately..it doesn't care if it's good bacteria or bad bacteria, so yes, it does matter in a FOWLR too, as they keep your tank cycled.

Regal's post did a great job pointing out the pros and cons.

I agree with Kathy and CB747. Kick Ich will not work, nor will any other "Reef Safe" medication at this time. A diatom filter will definately remove all paracites "that enter it" Unfortunately some of the paracites will not want to get sucked up and will remain in your tank. I am on my fifth diatom filter and would not be without one, just not for ich. Copper will definately kill ich in a couple of days. There are other tways to do it even faster but copper is fine. The only thing with copper is that you must get a copper test kit and monitor the dosage every day. You will probably have to add some copper each day to keep the level at the recomended dosage. If you let it drop, you will have to start the treatment over again. I also agree with Kathy that a UV sterilizer will have little effect. Even if the UV kills the paracites you have the same problem as the diatom. Many of the paracites will remain in the tank and you only need one.
Good luck.
