Hey everyone! Been a while been so busy with senior year! Planning to get started on my reef again after finals!
Regardless, I wanted to know if any of you guys have kept an eel in a mixed reef? My new tank is over 300 gallons so I dont think space should be a problem. Only problem I can think of is my inverts being in a little trouble.

i had a green wolf eel in mine... i loved it, best looking eel (thou i'm not sure its actually in the eel family) it has great colors and always on the move.... would actually follow me around and never went after fish or corals etc. never jumped either. Personally the easiest to feed too.

Did you have any inverts in the tank?
Im expecting to put in quite a bit of nassarius snails for the sand bed and would a couple of cleaner shrimps. Thats about it for now.

Green wolf eel is not an eel. As far as I know all eels will eat crustaceans, they are part of their diet. Now there are a few fish that resemble eels such as the above mentioned, and the neon goby. Best of wishes with your search for an eel that won't eat crustaceans.;)

what up J!

an eel in the reef is cool, but you better plan his tank mates well in advance.

Also it will present some challenges for lighting as the top and overflow need to be sealed up tight! I see people who keep large eels use glass tops that cover the entire tank, not a crack showing, and they have bricks on top of them!

you will have to design an escape proof tank, good luck :)

I have 2 snowflakes on 2 ribbons in my softie tank. Ive seen the snowflakes pick up snails and move them but ive never seen them eat them. I also have 4 dwarf golden morays in a smaller softie tank with snails and hermits and havent seen them go after anything either. One tank is covered by eggcrate with gutter guard on top of that and the other is a canopy with gutterguard across the back to keep any escapees in the tank.

LMAO @ bricks! But wuoldnt covering the top of the tank with glass reduce oxygen exchange on the surface?

yes, you can use the eggcrate like Jose mentioned.

by the way, when eels get big, bricks are needed to keep them from pushing the cover up! I did not mean your average size snowflake eel, I meant for the larger morays :D

That's one of the most aggressive eels you can get. You can't place that in a reef tank or with most other fish.

Gymnothorax melatremus

They're on the expensive side, and can be hard to find for sale, but they will do well in a reef tank, especially since they only get about 10" or so. You need to watch out not to put them with corals that sting as they can get burn marks on their body.
